One of my favourite things to teach because I loved learning it at Ontario College of Art. I accidentally ended up having to take an entire year of colour theory and have never looked back
Knowing how to translate all the colours that are in your head onto the physical plane is very liberating, and essential! We will use this knowledge to make the happiest rainbow of colours with our epoxy
I have been experimenting and excelling in this medium for many years and I am so excited to share everything that I know.
All that we learn in this class can carry over to many other mediums
We will also learn all about the wonderful world metallic foils. Rummage through my vast supply of intensely bright and shiny foils which are brilliant (literally) as an entire background layer or as finely applied detail
My goal as an artist is to always feel free to play and experiment. Everyone will have a different recipe for success. Included in mine are these ingredients: knowledge of materials, wide open space and the freedom from expectations and boundaries
Come on your own or bring a friend(s) All materials provided, you just bring a lunch and comfy paint clothes/shoes
We will work on a couple of smaller wood boards in a number of techniques

I use holographic foils to create the base for the sky paintings. The depth you achieve is like no other medium. It's the closest thing to deep space that you can come to in the human world
Starting with the holographic foils, we'll add a sprinkle of stars, neon swirls of colour and a dusting of magic
Epoxy can be tinted to any depth of colour. When it's all mixed together, you can stand back and watch the amazing transformation as it blends in its own cosmic way
You will learn so many amazing things about the medium of epoxy: how to tint it, what products to use and where to get them as well as new artistic ways to use it in combination with traditional mediums such as acrylics, raw pigments and alcohol inks
Classes are small and take place in my studio/gallery in Carleton place. It's a wonderful, large and sunny space where we don't have to worry about making a mess!
This is a one day class from 10 am until 4 pm
All materials provided including your 18" x 24" gallery profile wood board. Bring a lunch and comfy work clothes. Snacks and bevies provided.

We will start by choosing the main colour theme of your piece and mix acrylics for your 'underpainting'
Landscapes are all about depth and texture
By letting the spatula drag the colours across your board, you get very natural blending. It's addictively fun and effective
You might want some bits of flowers, or metallic foiled leaf detail, a small critter or...
We'll finish by adding a layer of coloured epoxy which will enhance the depth of colour and add a beautiful lustre
You'll be surprised how easy it is to create solid masterpiece
We will work on an 18"x 24" Gallery profile wood boarding you'll have the choice of an abstract theme or a landscape one.
First we start with some acrylic underpainting, to set the tone and shape of the painting. Then we design our 'garden' with metallic foils
Epoxy can be tinted to any depth of colour. When combined with the brilliance of metallic foils, the depth of colour is unparalleled
You will learn so many amazing things about the medium of epoxy. How to tint it and what specific products to use. You will come away with loads of ideas about how to use it in new artistic ways and in combination with traditional mediums such as acrylics

The epoxy takes anywhere from 3 to 24 hours to cure or to be ready for foiling. So in order to achieve a special depth of colour and texture we would need about 3 separate half days add multiple layers of flowers, grasses and colour.
This is a fun experimental stage that includes acrylic underpainting, setting the tone and layout of the painting. We then work with epoxy and foils along with other medium to create dynamic, natural textures as a base
This stage takes place over several days, as each layer cures we add metallic foils, more colour, more flowers and grass
Mid-week dates are available upon request
